How to survive a road trip with children

Anybody who has kids recognizes that travelling with preschoolers can get a bit rowdy. Plenty of parents, myself included, often wish we had just stayed home.

But, weary traveling parent, relax. There's definitely hope. Some planning is all it takes to make your upcoming journey a far more enjoyable one.

It may be as simple as providing some entertainment. A bored child is a cranky, difficult child. Ask each child to select 3 to 5 toys to bring along with them. If you make the kids a part of the planning process then they are more likely to choose something that they will enjoy.

Eventually the toys and games will lose their capability to entertain. At this stage , you turn to fun and interesting road games. Road games including counting the number of blue cars or trying to find out of state travelers by their license plates. Older kids will have fun counting the number of license plates have the letter "C" or the number four. For something the entire family can usually get in on try the round robin style of story telling.

It's inevitable, one hundred miles from nowhere your son or daughter will pipe out with, "Mommy, I'm hungry." And, we all know, a hungry preschooler is a whiney, unhappy preschooler. Never leave the house with no cooler full of fun, easily consumed snacks. Sliced apples and peanut butter, celery stuffed with cream cheese, grilled cheese sandwiches cut into fun shapes, veggie sticks, or bananas make great on-the-road snacks for preschoolers.

Driving with your child can be a fun opportunity to discover more about one another. Planning ahead with healthy snacks and useful, fun acitvities and you'll make your trip a more enjoyable.
